I have been teaching art and
Spanish at Kennedy Middle School for three years. My curriculum is
based on a multi-cultural approach. Our school is made up of five
major cultural groups: Anglo, Hispanic, African American, Native
American and Asian.
My lessons reflect the art of these cultures. For example, I teach about the history of pottery through the Native American perspective. One of the basic pots is the coil pot which is used in most traditional Native American pottery. While the student is learning art, he is also learning about other cultures.
My Spanish class is based on the language, culture, and history of the people of the Southwest. We cook in class foods that are traditional to the area. We have made tortillas, sopapillas, tacos, enchiladas and many other dishes. I believe in a hands on approach to language. Through these kinds of activities students learn vocabulary and gain an understanding of the Spanish-speaking people of the Southwest.
